First Sermon
(Surah al-Fajr: 1–3)
Ma’āsyiral Muslimīn rahimakumullāh,
At the beginning of this brief sermon, the khatib advises all of us, especially himself, to constantly strive to increase our taqwā and faith in Allah ﷻ by fulfilling all His commands and avoiding all that He has forbidden.
Dear respected congregation,
Right now, we are in the third day of the first ten days of the month of Dhul Hijjah 1446, days which are beloved and honored by Allah ﷻ. This year, the first of Dhul Hijjah falls on Wednesday, 28 May 2025. So this Friday is the third day of Dhul Hijjah.
During these ten days, we are highly encouraged to perform and multiply righteous deeds. Good deeds carried out during this time are rewarded manifold by Allah ﷻ. Let us fill these noble days with all kinds of good actions and obedience to Allah.
Among them: fasting from the first to the ninth day, especially fasting on the ninth—known as the fast of ʿArafah; being dutiful to our parents; maintaining family ties; visiting graves; repenting from all sins; attending religious gatherings more diligently; and reading the Qur’an more frequently.
We should also increase our remembrance of Allah (dhikr): tasbīḥ, taḥmīd, takbīr, and tahlīl, as well as making more duʿāʾ, offering more voluntary prayers, giving more charity, and other good deeds.
Ma’āsyiral Muslimīn rahimakumullāh,
So honored are the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah that Allah ﷻ swears by them in the Qur’an:
(Surah al-Fajr: 1–3)
In a hadith narrated by Imam Ahmad, al-Bukhari, at-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah from Ibn Abbas (raḍiyallāhu ‘anhumā), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
They said, “O Messenger of Allah, not even jihad in the way of Allah?” He said, “Not even jihad in the way of Allah, except for a man who goes out with his life and wealth and returns with nothing.”
Ma’āsyiral Muslimīn rahimakumullāh,
Among the ten days is the greatest day of the year, which is the Day of ʿArafah—the 9th of Dhul Hijjah—which this year will fall on Thursday, 5 June. On that day, we are especially encouraged to do righteous deeds, fast, and make plenty of supplication.
When asked about fasting on the Day of ʿArafah, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“It expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.” (HR Muslim)
In another narration, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“There is no day on which Allah frees more of His servants from Hellfire than on the Day of ʿArafah.” (HR Muslim)
Imam Mālik also narrated:
“Satan is never seen more humiliated, expelled, debased, and angry than on the Day of ʿArafah.” (HR Mālik)
Because of the immense mercy Allah sends down and the multitude of sins He forgives on that day—things Satan detests.
The Prophet ﷺ also said:
“The best supplication is the one made on the Day of ʿArafah. And the best thing I and the prophets before me have said is: Lā ilāha illa Allāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lah.” (HR Mālik)
For those intending to perform qurbān, it is recommended not to cut the hair or nails from the beginning of Dhul Hijjah until the animal is sacrificed, as stated in a hadith narrated by Imam Muslim.
Lastly, the night of ʿEid al-Adha is one of the five nights in which duʿāʾ is accepted, as stated by Imam al-Shāfiʿī in al-Umm:
“It has reached us that it was said: Supplications are answered on five nights— the night of Jumu’ah (Friday), the night of Eid al-Adha, the night of Eid al-Fitr, the first night of Rajab, and the night of mid-Sha’ban.”
Ma’āsyiral Muslimīn rahimakumullāh,
That concludes this short khutbah. May it be beneficial for all of us.
Second Sermon
